Spring is in the air, and we made the most of it! We spent all day Saturday at Kings Dominion with the kids, then turned right around Sunday for a full day of baseball—8 AM to 8 PM at the fields for a tournament. I never get tired of watching my boys compete, face failure head-on, and push through self-doubt. Baseball has a way of humbling you one moment and showing you what’s possible the next.
It’s that same spirit of challenge and adaptation that I want to talk about today—how our species has evolved, not just mentally and physically, but deep within our digestive hardware. The appendix, often dismissed as useless, tells a powerful story. One more piece of evidence that we’re biologically built to thrive on red meat.

In primates like chimps, the appendix and cecum are much larger and used to ferment plant fiber into short-chain fatty acids—a critical energy source for herbivores.
But humans took a different path.
When our ancestors shifted toward animal-based diets—packed with red meat, fat, and bioavailable nutrients—our digestive systems adapted. We no longer relied on fiber fermentation.
